Somewhere along the way on my journey to senility, I got the notion that fishing in high alpine lakes is fun. I thought that tempting a giant trout in a shining mountain lake with a well-cast fly was a great — if not noble — avocation.
Two issues — as the cognoscenti say — dispute that notion:

Commercial Fishing for Vermilion Snapper to Reopen in the South Atlantic Federal Waters May 1 until May 8, 2011
The commercial sector for vermilion snapper in federal waters of the South Atlantic from, Cape Hatteras Light, North Carolina (35°15.19' N. latitude), to Key West, Florida, will reopen, effective 12:01 a.m. (local time) May 1, 2011, until 12:01 a.m. May 8, 2011. NOAA Fisheries Service has determined the January – June 2011, commercial quota of 315,523 pounds has not yet been met.
Here are the latest trout plants and catch reports from Southwest Washington, and the highlight is the kokanee fishing.
In Silver Lake near Castle Rock, 32 anglers had two bass. A lot of hours fishing, but not much luck. Water temperature is 51 degrees.
In Kress Lake near Kalama, 31 anglers caught two rainbows (14- and 15-inches) and 16 released. Lots of effort, but very slow fishing. Water temperature is 50 degrees.
Kosciusko Lakes and Streams has recently found that sport fishing in Kosciusko County is a $27.8 million annual industry.The organization says it is directly affected by water cleanliness.According to KLAS Director Dr. Nate Bosch, other states, including Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Ohio, have done similar Lake Economic Impact studies, yielding findings that show water cleanliness as the most important factor in influencing where people choose to spend leisure time. Bosch says that New Hampshire found lakes had a $1.8 billion impact annually, and Maine found this value to be $6.7 billion.

The golden triangle, which made up of Lake Roosevelt, Banks Lake and Rufus Woods Reservoir, continues to keep anglers busy.
Lake Roosevelt remains one of the hottest spots in the state for rainbow trout fishing. There are times, when Roosevelt is dropping, that even the fishing from shore can be fantastic. Anglers can expect rainbow from 12 to over 20 inches to take their Power Bait cast from the shore at Spring Canyon. Trolling for trout is excellent, too.
2 - At Madeira Beach, solid action for kingfish, Spanish mackerel, spinner sharks and red grouper from Blinds Pass up to hard bottom off Redington Pier on live blue runners, threadfin herring, scaled sardines, pinfish and Spanish sardines, reports Capt. Jason Lineberger (813-363-9474). Farther offshore in 83 feet-plus zone, amberjack and blackfin tuna doing very well, Lineberger said. Capt. Jessie Mayer boated 30-pound blackfin in 70 feet. Mangrove snapper up to 7 pounds consistent on deep ledges beyond 83 feet, worth the run, Lineberger said.
